GBA expresses solidarity with Colamb villagers

GOA BACHAO ABHIYAN PRESS RELEASE

March 28, 2008:
A team of Goa Bachao Abhiyan visited Colamb village in Sanguem taluka on 26 March (Wednesday) to express solidarity with the people's peaceful struggle. The villagers are agitating to uphold the law, the order of the High Court, the resolution of the Gram Sabha of their village and the wishes of its people, all four of which converged to say that mining operations, obviously including transport of ore, should not be carried out at Colomb.


The GBA team including Patricia Pinto, Annand Madgavkar, Ritu Prasad, Pravin Sabnis, Leroy Veloso, Shashi Kamat, Miguel Braganza and others visited the site alongwith the villagers led by Rama Velip and Dr. Claude Alvares of Goa Foundation. Seby Fernandes and Pandurang Cuncolienkar of GAKUVED and Sandeep Azrencar of Nisarg Nature Club were also present.

Dr. Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation served a copy of the Court proceedings of 10 March, 2008, to the Police Inspector of Quepem at the Police Station and also presented to him a copy of the book "GOA: Sweet land of Mine." He requested the Police to uphold the law and to serve the people, which is the primary duty of the state. The delegation also met the SP (South Goa), Mr Shekhar Prabhudesai and complained about the manhandling of women by the policemen. A meeting of all concerned parties has been called by the Additional Collector (South) on Friday to resolve the issue.
