Alert Carmona locals force stay on housing project

NT Staff Reporter

Margao, April 19 The recent developments in South Goa, points to the fact that the village panchayats there are proactively working for the betterment of locals by identifying their problems and tackling them.

Recently, villagers from Carmona protested against a housing project proposed by a Delhi-based developer and ensured its stay as the project involved a massive chunk of land from the village. The land acquisition proposed was near to the river Sal and was blocking the path to the river.

The findings said that the plan of the project proposed had 71 residential structures in 4 floors. The total number of homes in the proposed plan was more than 620. The villagers said that in a village with no continuous electricity supply the situation will be worsened with such a plan. The worst thing is that the housing project had a provision of 93 swimming pools, which were distributed as a swimming pool for each of the villa in the project.

“In a village without continuous supply of water, if more than half of the water will be taken for the filling of swimming pools than what will the rest of the village consume,” said Mr Orlando, a member of the Saxtti Forum from Carmona village.

Informing about the gram sabha incident in the panchayat held on the issue of the land grabbing, Mr A Pereira, another active player of the Saxtti forum said that the gram sabha was disrupted by a group of men by beating up people present there. He added that the act was preplanned by some important personality in the constituency and also gave the reason for this act, as stopping the project will stop him from gaining hard money from the developer.

“The accused have still not been arrested and not even a single effort has been made to arrest them”, lamented Mr A Pereira.

Mr Savia Viegas who runs a primary school who is also a member of the Saxtti forum objected the project arguing how are projects of such mammoth proportions being allowed to come up in Goa and only Goa without developing the basic infrastructure facilities in the villages.

“There are no proper schools no recreational centers and not even a single garden for the children to play in. Then what is the need for a housing project of such a big proportion,” said Ms Viegas.
