Canacona residents for action against illegal shacks

NT News Service

Canacona, Feb 18 The residents of Canacona have requested the chief officer of the Canacona municipality to take immediate action on illegal shacks and tents which are erected at Rajbhag (Tarir) beach by a hotel.

They said some of the structures which violated the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms were demolished by the Canacona municipality authorities in the month of September and October 2006, but they have failed to demolish the illegal structures of some big-shots. They were simply targeting the structures of the poor people.

Besides, they further said that water sports activities carried out by this hotel are also illegal, which are harming their fishing business.

Sources at the Canacona municipality office said that though the concerned hotel has applied for the licenses for the shacks, tents and huts, but on technical ground the file is not yet cleared.

The residents of the Rajbhag further pointed out that these temporary houses or beach bungalows are allegedly rented out to high class guests who prefer to be very close to the seashore.

Sources in the Canacona municipality office further said that these shacks, houses and bungalows have not paid the necessary fees so far to the office of the Canacona municipality, so the question of having licenses with them doesn’t arise.

The residents are however, furious with the CMC’s lenient move towards the hotel and sought to know when the tourism department has only permitted seven shacks on a beach like Palolem how can a hotel be allowed to house almost 35 beach shacks, houses and bungalows at Rajbhag beach.

Meanwhile, the All Goa Kshatriya Pagui Samaj, Canacona has strongly objected to the marine water sports activities introduced by a resort in Rajbhag, by saying that it would hamper their traditional fishing activities.

They further said that if the Canacona municipality did not take any action on such illegal activities within a week then they will take morcha on the Canacona municipality.

When contacted Mr Samir Desai, newly elected chairperson of the CMC, said that he will call a council meeting soon and decide the course of action to be initiated on the issues.
