Fomento’s Sonsodo works to be assessed during monsoons: PCB

HERALD
June 4,2010
The Goa Pollution Control Board on Friday said that Fomento has implemented certain measures at Sonsodo by covering the dump yard with tarpaulin and construction of tanks to collect lechate, but added that whether the measures would serve the purpose would be known only during the monsoons.

A team of Goa Pollution Control Board this evening inspected the Sonsodo site on three counts – whether Fomento has capped the site with tarpaulin, constructed tanks for leachate collection and the surface drains.

When newsmen asked whether the Board is satisfied with the measures implemented at Sonsodo, Board Chairman Dr Simon D’Souza said “appears to be, but we must see how it remains during the monsoons. Tarpaulin cover should remain”.

The inspection was carried out as the matter concerning Sonsodo is pending in the court and the Board was called to prepare a report on the ground reality and ensure that there’s no seepage of leachate in the ground. He said Fomento has compacted the dumping site, adding there is less possibility of the tanks collapsing during the monsoons.

Fomento’s Chief Executive Officer Shridhar Kamat said the Pollution Control Board has inspected whether the company has covered the dump yard with tarpaulin and built tanks for collection of leachate waters.

“One thing is clear that we have covered the site with tarpaulin, the surface drains and the three leachate tanks are ready. We will use only two leachate tanks, each with a capacity of 50,000 litres, and will use the third tank if required”, Kamat said.

Kamat said the company is full geared up to meet any eventuality. “We have deployed a machinery for aeration. There are 30 labourers engaged at the site. There would not be any problem of leachate this monsoons”, Kamat said.
