Govt entertaining criminals to set up SEZ in Guleli: Matanhy

BY HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, DEC 8 — Lashing out at the Government for supporting criminals, Goa’s Movement Against SEZs charged the Government of entertaining criminals like the Chawla brothers to set up an SEZ in Guleli.
Addressing a press conference Saturday afternoon, Convenor GMAS Matanhy Saldanha recalled, “If one remembers, the three Chawla brothers had duped a large number of Goans of crores of rupees through their nefarious company, Rockland Leasing Ltd, many years ago.”
These are wanted people and the Government had the courage to accept their application for setting up the SEZ at Guleli, Saldanha chided and added, “Let not Goans be fooled again.”
He demanded that the Government de-notify all the zones, including the two notified ones and scrap the SEZ policy forever. Also, scrap the IT and Food parks, he asserted.
He congratulated the people of Taleigao and Keri for their bold stand to oppose projects in their respective areas.

“Work has voluntarily stopped at some zones after people mounted pressure. We want the promoters of these zones to voluntarily leave Goa,” Saldanha stressed. These SEZ troubles are not good for tourism, he added.
He called upon the people to unite against the SEZs irrespective of caste, religion and political affiliations and come out boldly to protect Goa.
Saldanha informed that the SEZ Hatao Yatra of GMAS would take off from Valpoi at 10 am on December 10. From there, the rally will move throughout the State till December 17, he stated.
He mentioned that the yatra would halt in Margao for seven hours so that all people can attend a meeting organised there.
Saldanha said on December 18, GMAS has organized a protest march in Panjim that will commence from the Tourist Jetty in the afternoon near the new Patto Bridge and culminate in a public meeting at Azad Maidan.
