How Regional Plan Kills…Visit Bambolim, witness yourself

BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, DEC 23
— Eager to know how the Regional Plan 2011 would cause ecological damage to Goa in the name of development? Visit the construction site at Bambolim on December 26 at 4.30 pm for a meeting and inspection organised by Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA).

Goa Bachao Abhiyan has appealed to all Goans to visit the Bambolim construction site and see for themselves the ecological damage that could cause to Goa if the so-called “development” envisaged in the Regional Plan 2011 is allowed.

Addressing a press conference, Patricia Pinto said the authorities enforced no laws at Bambolim and the work was stopped only when GBA activists highlighted the illegalities. But, she said the project at Bambolim is just the tip of the iceberg, and hit out at the agencies for turning a blind eye to the illegalities.

GBA activist Sabina Martins said the government should provide more information on the concept of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in the State, while activist Roland Martins sought to know whether the government has plans to earmark the existing Industrial Estates as SEZ.

In his address, GBA activist Sridhar Kamat, while thanking Goans for their overwhelming response to the Save Goa movement, appealed to all social organisations, youth and sports clubs and associations to submit memorandums demanding scrapping of the Regional Plan in the present form.

Association and clubs are also urged to organise various competitions like elocution, drawing, poster making, street plays for youth on the subject “Scrap the present Regional Plan 2011.” The object of the exercise is to educate the youth of the dangers of unplanned and haphazard development and to enlist their active involvement in the movement.
