Narvekar assures probe into Canacona sale deeds

NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, March 7 The Minister for Law, Mr Dayanand Narvekar today gave an assurance that he would initiate an inquiry into a sale deed, involving sale of large area of land near the coastline at Loliem, in Canacona taluka, by referring the matter to the Collector, South Goa.

Earlier, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party stated that a number of sale deeds were made, in recent times, involving sale of nearly 50 lakh sq mts of land, mostly in Loliem.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, taking strong objection to a particular land deal, during the Question Hour, alleged that the same was signed in a 5-star hotel, during night time, and the mutation was completed within 24 days. He also demanded to know how the government could recover the balance stamp duty amount.

The Law Minister, acknowledging the possibility of such a sale deed taking place, said that he would hold the inquiry if related documents are provided.

Mr Parrikar, agreeing to supply all the documents exposing the illegalities, said that the inquiry would not only help the government treasury to increase its revenue, but also stop “many other things” taking place through such sale deeds.

Mr Narvekar, in a written reply, informed the Canacona MLA, Mr Vijay Pai Khot that in all 343 sale deeds were registered from Canacona area, at Canacona registration office from June 1, 2005 to January 31, 2007.

He also informed the House that though the law department was concerned about the large number of sale deeds, it was governed by the Indian Registration Act, and that the sub-registrar was not concerned about the validity of the documents of the sale deeds.
