Navelim villagers oppose construction of fuel pump

HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JAN 30
—The Navelim Panchayat gram sabha has adopted a resolution to revoke permission granted to a petrol pump at Fradilem on grounds that the party has misrepresented certain facts. Residents of the locality where the petrol pump is proposed assembled in large numbers at the gram sabha meeting and demanded that the permission issued to the pump be revoked.

They maintained that the party has misrepresented certain facts, including the fact that the pump is proposed in a residential locality, raising apprehensions that the pump will be harmful and hazardous to the local residents. When contacted, Sarpanch Ana Carneiro confirmed that the panchayat has taken the resolution at the Sunday gram sabha meeting based on demand made by the local residents.

“The resolution will be forwarded to the district collector as well as the Town and Country Planning Department for further action”, she added. Carneiro, however, maintained that the party had obtained all NOCs from the concerned authorities, including the district Collector, to set up the petrol pump. “The party is having all the NOCs and has government approval for the pump”, she said.

The Sarpanch said the gram sabha meeting has resolved to revoke the permission after the residents cited some “misrepresentations” made by the party.
Meanwhile, the gram sabha has also opposed the Special Economic Zone in the state. A member Harold Pinto said the government should come out with a white paper on the employment generated by the existing industries.

He also demanded that the government should scrap the Outline Development Plan in the cities.
