News ArticlesState not interested in gobbling GU land: CMNT Staff Reporter Panaji, Feb 19 The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane said that the state was not interested in gobbling up land owned by the Goa University, but just wanted that 50 acre plot of land for a convention center, which will be useful for people in the state. The Vice Chancellor should take the necessary steps so that the misunderstanding in the minds of the people is resolved amicably, he said, after laying the foundation stone for the boysâ hostel at the Goa University campus this evening. âWe want to leave something useful for the people of the state and do not want the land for ourselves but to set up an international convention centre, which the university too can use for its functions,â he added. It may be recalled that the Goa University was asked for 50 acres of its land by the government to set up a convention centre but the same was met with protests. Mr Rane also said that the government was planning to establish a maritime university in the state. He said the establishment of a maritime university would help maritime students conduct studies related to sea-based activities and help maritime industries. He also said that considering the demand and the importance of the shipping sector in the state, the government is looking for land for the same. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Mr P S Zacharias said the growth of the university is dynamic and it should continue to grow so that it can handle the congestion and meet the demand for space. The proposed boysâ hostel will consist of a single anchor shaped building spread over an area of 1,500 sq metres with the common area centrally located and the rooms places on both sides. The ground floor will consist of a large lobby area with visitorâs rooms, wardenâs room, offices, and twenty-eight rooms with common toilet facilities, kitchen and dining area. Two staircases and a lift would connect the lobby with the two upper floors; the first and the second floor have indoor recreational areas and fifty-six rooms. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 4.93 crore. The project is to be completed in 12-14 months. The managing director of the GSIDC, Mr Manish Bahuguna also addressed the gathering while the university registrar, Mr Mohan Sangodkar proposed the vote of thanks. |
