Stop SEZs if harmful to Goa, says Sardinha

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, DEC 12 — South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha has reiterated that the government should not hesitate to stop the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) if they are indeed harm-full and against the interest of Goa and Goans.
He, however, suggested to Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat to seek the expertise of experts before taking a final decision on the controversial subject.
“Stop the SEZs if they will be harmful for Goa and Goans. But, go ahead with the SEZs if they would be beneficial for the state”, Sardinha said, amidst thunderous applause at a function organised by the Citizens Committee to felicitate him on his winning the South Goa Parliamentary seat.

Sardinha comments on the SEZ came after a speaker Dr Francisco Colaco appealed to the MP to say no to SEZ instead of favouring 2-3 SEZs for Goa. Colaco also appealed to the Chief Minister to say no to unplanned development that lacks transparency and save Goa and Goans.
The MP said it is the responsibility of the state political leadership to do what is good for the future of Goa and its posterity. “The CM has stopped the SEZs. He want to personally see the functioning of SEZs elsewhere. The CM should see it fast and take a decision”, Sardinha said.
He, however, pointed out that Goa is way behind Hyderabad and Bangalore by half-a-decade in the IT sector.
In his reply to his felicitation, Sardinha called upon the educated and the experts to guide them in taking up issues in Parliament which are dear to Goans. “We would solicit your guidance to take up Goan issues in Parliament”, he said and disclosed plans to take up at the Centre the need for bridges at Canacona and across Zuari river.
Kamat said that unlike others, Sardinha is one politician who will not back stab from behind, adding “Sardinha’s work kept him in good stead during the Lok Sabha polls”.
Speakers spoke highly about the qualities of Sardinha in his 30-year old political life. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said he and Sardinha can lead the party to greater heights, confidently saying “the Congress can easily rule for the next 10 years”.
Other speakers such as Industrialist Dattaraj Salgaocar, Dr Wilfred de Souza, Luizinho Faleiro, Subhash Shirodkar, Dr Francisco Colaco, Uday Bhembre, Sulochana Katkar, Luis Alex Cardozo, besides the Chief Minister described Sardinha as a kind-hearted persons and an effable personality.
