Villagers protest against Keri SEZ

NT News Service
Ponda, Dec 7 The anguished villagers of Keri in Ponda taluka, who have been up in arms against the SEZ coming up at Arla Keri, today entered the SEZ land and deterred around 400 labourers from working. They forced them to leave the site in the presence of the deputy collector, Mr Jayant Tari and strong police posse.

The police maintained that the agitating villagers, who camped at the SEZ land throughout the day, had sought permission to enter the proposed SEZ site.

An accident involving a bulldozer at the SEZ site provoked the people, who had come for a zatra in the wee hours, to resort to a rasta roko at the site demanding the presence of the deputy collector. They stopped the driver of the bulldozer telling him that no heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply on interior roads as often accidents take place on these roads. They shouted anti-SEZ slogan and started blocking the road. However, the agitation was peaceful.

The local sarpanch, Dr Videsh Jalmi, who led the daylong agitation, said that he has been assured by SEZ officials after a meeting that all the machineries would be kept off the SEZ land and be brought at the entrance of the SEZ site to prove that the work has been stopped.

“We asked the SEZ officials to stop the work. I was shocked to see that the work was on war footing. The deputy collector, Mr Jayant Tari assured us that the work would be suspended till December 13. On December 13, a meeting would be held with senior uthorities,’’ informed the sarpanch.

Saying that he and the policemen had come at the SEZ site to maintain law and order, Mr Tari observed that a decision on SEZ was not under his jurisdiction and only the government could take a decision on it.

PI, Mr Manjunath Desai and other policemen tried to pacify the agitating people who were grilling the deputy collector.

Later, a meeting was held under the banner of the Keri Nagrik Samiti, which was attended by 300 villagers. They demanded immediate scrapping of the SEZ. The agitators threatened to do a repeat of the Nylon 66 agitation.

People from Loutolim village led by the sarpanch, Mr Sergeo Fernandes, leaders of the SEZ Virodh Manch, the Goa Bachao Abhiyan also extended their support to the villagers.

The DySP, Mr Mahesh Gaonkar, PI, Collem, Mr Monoj Mardolkar, and around 25 constable were present at the site.
